Fort Kent - Kathleen (Kathy) Ellen Plourde passed away May 3, 2019, in Fort Kent, Maine, after bravely fighting multiple myeloma. She was born in Staten Island, New York to William and Rose (Hromadka) Gibbons on August 17, 1933. After obtaining a Master's degree in Public Health Nursing from St. John's University in New York City, she built her career as a public health nurse, a visiting nurse, and a nursing instructor. She taught at several colleges including Wagner College in Staten Island, New York; Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, Michigan; and the University of Maine in Fort Kent. She was married to William Heil Jr. from 1957 to 1981 and had a son and daughter from that marriage. She married Kenneth Plourde in 1991, whereupon they both retired and enjoyed the next 26 years as snowbirds between Fort Kent and Colony Cove in Ellenton, Florida.
Kathy was predeceased by her son, James Heil. She is survived by her husband, Ken; her daughter, Christina (Dennis) Bush, of Nashville, Michigan; her stepchildren, Anne (Rusty) Taylor of Houlton, Maine; Roger (Sandy) Plourde of Montreal, Canada; Bill (Marie) Plourde of Fort Kent, Maine; Dana Plourde of Fort Kent, Maine; Allen (Sheila) Plourde of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; and many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Bill (Carol) Gibbons of Port St. Lucie, Florida; her brother, Michael Gibbons of Staten Island, New York; along with other Gibbons and Hromadka relatives.
Once she retired, Kathy kept busy tutoring elementary school students, singing with choral ensembles, acting in community theater groups, and organizing field trips at Colony Cove. She particularly enjoyed becoming a grandmother and great-grandmother after marrying into the Plourde family.
Kathy was known for her giving spirit and her willingness to throw herself into activities that were fun and different. She was always on the lookout for a bargain. She enjoyed travelling to see new sights and old friends. Because she was always on the go, it was difficult for her to slow down during her final weeks. However, she's likely checking up on friends and family in heaven, and looking for another bargain!
The family is being served by Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home in Fort Kent. Visitation will occur at the Fort Kent Assembly of God Church at 564 Frenchville Road on Friday, May 10, from 11 to 11:45 AM. The funeral service will begin at the church at noon and be followed by a luncheon there. Charitable donations in memory of Kathy can be directed to Northern Light Home Care & Hospice Foundation or the University of Maine Fort Kent Foundation. Kathy's family expresses its deepest gratitude for the support provided by her Northern Light hospice team and by our friends at the Assembly of God Church.
